Home Made Dog Biscuits

I saw this in a magazine today, and thought I'd pass it on:>)

4 cups whole-wheat flour
2 cups old-fashioned oatmeal
1 1/4 cups water with boullion
1/4 cup minced apple
3 Tbsp ground cinnamon
2 Tbsp veg oil
2 Tbsp honey
1 Tbsp ground cloves

Heat oven to 325 deg F. Place all ingredients in a large bowl, and mix thoroughly until combined to form dough.

Roll out dough on floured surface to about 1/4 inch thick. Using a cookie cutter, cut into bone shapes. Combine dough scraps and continue to roll out and cut into shapes until all duogh has been used. Place cookies on ungreased foil-lined baking sheets. Bake 30 to 35 minutes. Makes 5 to 6 dozen. Easy huh?

I'm thinking garlic would be good to add too, maybe instead of the apple, cinnamon and cloves.

sounds good enough for humans!

i'd use a boullion base instead of water and definitely garlic and some red pepper - it would certainly keep them free from parasites. plus, ticks and fleas are bothered by garlic.

Garlic is excellent, and ginger, it drives mosquitos away(heartworms).
Good find Eyes!

Ya? Ginger or garlic? (drives mosquitos away)... We have a real infestation here this summer due to the boat loads of rain we had this spring. My dogs go crazy when I'm trying to swat them (very sensitive dogs:>))

Actually, in chinese cooking you will have both. I've found my pup loves it when I cook ANYTHING for him! So he would be real excited about those. Use grated carrot instead of apple.
Lots of variations that would be healthy.

i'd also use some rice instead of so much oatmeal for the binding agents - if you know what i mean?

Brown rice, better fiber. How about whole wheat flour instead of white? And a little parsley...
Good morning, G*D bless and Maranatha!

fyi - my children have had to try every dog biscuit and treat we've ever given our pets - when we go to the feed store, for some strange reason they have sampler troughs out with just a few scoops in each section - stuff for horses, pigs, cattle and other livestock - the kids always wondered "what the hell are those troughs with feed in them for?" so they started sampling them and found they liked some of the horse feed, especially if it had molasses in it...oh boo...

WHO is going to bring a cow or horse inside the feed store to sample feed?

HA HA HA HA HA!! OMGosh, that's funny! True! You're a blast Nanc! Seriously:>D

Those dog biscuits would have a hard time making it to the dogs, Eyes. I think my handyman and husband would probably eat them first! :)

My brother used to get busted for eating his Guinea Pig's food when we were little.

That boy never was quite right... ;)

Alfalfa pellets, Brooke? Maybe he needed more roughage...
He got backed up and it got to his brain?
